Michelle Mackie's artwork is often described as ethereal and fairy tale-esque.

A photographer and digital artist, Michelle is a master at visual storytelling.

We love her strong feminine figures taking centre stage in her artworks.

Michelle Mackie’s painting “Just One More Chapter” vividly captures the enchanting power of literature through a striking visual narrative. The central figure, a girl deeply engrossed in a thick book, wears a long, flowing ball gown crafted from books. This unique and symbolic attire emphasises her profound connection to the stories she reads, as if the very books she consumes are becoming part of her identity. The choice of the dress made from books suggests that literature is not merely something external, but something that wraps around and becomes intertwined with her being.

The title “Just One More Chapter” alludes to the familiar feeling of wanting to keep reading, capturing the addictive quality of books. It reflects the irresistible pull of a good story, where the reader is so absorbed that the idea of stopping seems impossible. This sentiment is something many readers can relate to, highlighting the compelling and immersive nature of a well-crafted narrative.

The symbolism runs deeper with the small birds that surround the girl, further enriching the concept of transformation. These birds represent the idea of being transported to another world through the act of reading. They evoke a sense of freedom and movement, mirroring the mental and emotional journey that takes place when a reader becomes truly lost in a book. In this sense, the birds symbolize the transformative power of literature—how it can lift us from our current reality and carry us into new realms of imagination and possibility.

Overall, Mackie’s painting is a celebration of the magic and escapism found in books. The girl, fully immersed in her reading, becomes both a part of the world she is exploring and a metaphor for the immersive experience that literature provides. The surrounding birds and her gown made of books symbolize how reading not only offers a temporary escape but also has the power to transform us, altering how we see ourselves and the world around us.
